![]() ![]() A larger version of the Turbo-Fire arrived in 1957, now bored out to 3.875 in (98.4 mm) gave the new engine a total displacement of 283 cu in (4,638 cc), this engine was dubbed the "Super Turbo-Fire". Nicknamed the "Mighty Mouse", the Turbo-Fire soon became popular within the hot rodding community too, along with scoring wins in stock car racing. This contributed to lowering the Corvette's 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) from 11 seconds to 8.7. The 265 Turbo-Fire distinguished itself from other engines of the era such as Cadillac's 331 series of the late 1940s and early 1950s by reducing the size and weight of various components within the engine a compact engine block combined with a light valvetrain gave the Turbo-Fire a 40 lb (18 kg) weight reduction compared to the inline-sixes that initially powered the first generation of the Corvette, alongside a significant horsepower increase of 25%. The brainchild of Chevrolet chief engineer Ed Cole, first generation of the Chevrolet small-block engine were first unveiled in the 1955 Chevrolet Corvette and Chevrolet Bel Air, both powered by the 265 cu in (4,343 cc) "Turbo-Fire". These engines also enjoy a high degree of aftermarket support due to their popularity and affordability. The serviceability and parts availability for various Gen III and Gen IV engines have made them a popular choice for engine swaps in the car enthusiast and hot rodding community, and sometimes is known colloquially as an LS swap. Gen V engines do not share as much with the previous two, although the engine block is carried over, along with the connecting rods. However, the Gen III and Gen IV engines were designed with modularity in mind, and several engines of the two generations share a large number of interchangeable parts. Ī clean-sheet design, the only shared components between the Gen III engines and the first two generations of Chevrolet small-block engine are the connecting rod bearings and valve lifters. Various other General Motors automobiles have been powered by LS- and LT-based engines, including trucks such as the Chevrolet Silverado, sports cars such as the Holden Commodore and SUVs such as the Cadillac Escalade. LS and LT engines have powered every single generation of the Corvette since the C5, with the exception of the Z06 variant of the eighth generation Corvette, which is powered by an unrelated small-block engine, the Chevrolet Gemini small-block engine. This can sometimes be misleading, as not all engine RPO codes in the three generations begin with LT or LS. The Regular Production Option (RPO) code of the engine, LS, has since been used to generally refer to all Gen III and Gen IV engines, however, Gen V engines are generally referred to as "LT" small-blocks. ![]() The "LS" nomenclature originally came from the first engine of the Gen III engines, the LS1, which was fitted in the Chevrolet Corvette (C5). Various small-block V8s were and still are available as crate engines. Spanning three generations, a new, sixth generation is expected to enter production soon. First introduced in 1997, the family is a continuation of the earlier Chevrolet small-block engine (first- and second-generations), of which over 100 million have been produced altogether, and is also considered to be one of the most popular V8 engines ever. The General Motors LS-based small-block engines are a family of V8 and V6 engines designed and manufactured by American automotive company General Motors. Chevrolet small-block engine (first and second generation) ![]() ![]() ![]() Without color management, however, I doubt you would see a big improvement. Dont forget to save your settings regularly in a way you can remember what they are. The LS-50 is faster than the LS-40, and some report better color. The Input Tab has a focus and auto focus option in Vuescan. You need a spectrophotometer (eg, Gretag-MacBeth Eye One Photo) to create your own profile, or get one from a 3rd party profiling service. Inkjets are very consistent (if you use factory ink), so these profiles are reasonably accurate. Most premium inkjet paper manufacturers have a list of supported printers for which there are profiles. ![]() In that case, ASSIGN the new profile in Photoshop, then CONVERT the file back to Adobe RGB (or whatever) for ongoing compatibility. NikonScan does not have a way to use an external profile. This way, any adjustments you make are also accurate, and any problems you see are due to other equipment.įor the scanner, you can establish an IT8 profile with Silverfast AI6 (it comes with a slide) or buy an IT8 slide (and reference file) independently and use something like InCamera (by Pictocolor). The whole work flow is based on an accurate monitor. (3) Printer (use a combination of paper and ink with a published profile) (2) Scanner (with an IT8 target and software) I would calibrate/profile in the following order. ![]() Vuescan is cheaper, but not nearly as well automated as Silverfast. I prefer SilverFast AI6, which I also use with my LS-8000 and Epson scanners. NikonScan is not bad, but tends to be fiddly - you seem to need adjustments to often. Software is a major factor in getting consistent, good results with slides or negatives. Finally, you should scan in 14-bit mode, which may not be available in the LS-40. Software emulation of multi-pass scanning tends to reduce sharpness. Yu may need the LS-5000 to get native multi-pass scans. Multiscan is useful to reduce the noise level in low key (dark) slides. Use that as a starting point, and add adjustments sparingly (it's better to use Photoshop). You need to reset all of the automatic color adjustments in order to profile the scanner. Slides, especially Velvia, have very high contrast and DMax (the densest possible area of the slide). A problem has arisen in the past couple of days in that both the preview scan and the final scan are blighted by a green colour cast which is evident even on black and white scans. With a slide, what you see is what you get, from a calibrated scanner at least. I do quite a lot of slide and negative scanning using a Nikon Coolscan 4000ED and Vuescan software. You can profile the scanner, in essence "calibrating" it to scan slides for accurate color. The good news is that accurate color is easy to obtain. However, I can scan slides, primarily Velvia, and get good results. I have an LS-4000, which may have some capabilities not available in the LS-40 or LS-50. ![]() ![]() ![]() If tables from the same data source connection are imported at separate times, any relationships between those tables will not be created and must be created manually. ![]() If any of the relationships in the table above are missing, verify that your model includes the following tables: DimCustomer, DimDate, DimGeography, DimProduct, DimProductCategory, DimProductSubcategory, and FactInternetSales. ![]() Use the model designer in diagram view, or the Manage Relationships dialog box, to verify the following relationships were created when each of the tables were imported from the AdventureWorksDW database: ActiveĭimProductSubcategory The Manage Relationships dialog box show the relationships that were automatically created when you imported data. Right-click Relationships in Tabular Model Explorer, and then click Manage Relationships. In addition to using the model designer in diagram view, you can also use the Manage Relationships dialog box to show the relationships between all tables in a table format. The relationship's properties now also appear in the Properties window. This show these are the columns used in the relationship. Notice the GeographyKey column in the DimCustomer table and the GeographyKey column in the DimGeography table now both each appear within a box. The solid line between these two tables show this relationship is active, that is, it is used by default when calculating DAX formulas. To view all of the columns in a particular table, click, and drag on a table edge to expand or make it smaller.Ĭlick the solid line between the DimCustomer table and the DimGeography table. Moving tables does not affect the relationships already between the tables. ![]() You can also click, and drag tables to different locations, bringing tables closer together, or putting them in a particular order. Use the minimap controls in the lower-right corner of the model designer to adjust the view to include as many of the tables as possible. The lines between tables indicate the relationships that were automatically created when you imported the data. The model designer now appears in Diagram View, a graphical format displaying all of the tables you imported with lines between them. To review existing relationshipsĬlick the Model menu > Model View > Diagram View. For this tutorial, you will also add three new relationships. However, before you proceed with authoring your model you should verify those relationships between tables were created properly. Generally, when you import data from a relational source, existing relationships are automatically imported together with the data. When you imported data by using the Table Import Wizard, you got seven tables from the AdventureWorksDW database. Review existing relationships and add new relationships Before performing the tasks in this lesson, you should have completed the previous lesson: Lesson 3: Mark as Date Table. This topic is part of a tabular modeling tutorial, which should be completed in order. To learn more, see Relationships.Įstimated time to complete this lesson: 10 minutes Prerequisites For example, the DimProduct table and the DimProductSubcategory table have a relationship based on the fact that each product belongs to a subcategory. A relationship is a connection between two tables that establishes how the data in those tables should be correlated. In this lesson, you will verify the relationships that were created automatically when you imported data and add new relationships between different tables. SQL Server 2016 and later Analysis Services ![]() ![]() ![]() This subtle but important difference pays dividends for data storytellers in a few key ways: People hear statistics, but they feel stories. However, when someone is absorbed in a story, they discovered it stimulated more areas of the brain. When neuroscientists observed the effects detailed information had on an audience, brain scans revealed it only activated two areas of the brain associated with language processing: Broca’s area and Wernicke’s area. When you package up your insights as a data story, you build a bridge for your data to the influential, emotional side of the brain. Emotion actually plays an essential role in helping our brains to navigate the alternatives and arrive at a timely decision. ![]() Interestingly, these patients’ decision-making skills were significantly impaired by the lack of emotional judgment. Deciding on where to eat or when to schedule an appointment turned into lengthy cost-benefit debates for these individuals. USC professor Antonio Damasio found patients, who had brain damage in an area that helped to process emotions (prefrontal cortex), struggled to make basic decisions when choosing between alternatives. In fact, neuroscientists have confirmed decisions are often based on emotion, not logic. Unfortunately, this point of view is based on the flawed assumption that business decisions are based solely on logic and reason. ![]() They may believe the revealed insights alone should influence the right decisions and drive their audience to act. They may feel the insights or facts should be sufficient to stand on their own as long as they’re reported in a clear manner. Throughout time, storytelling has proven to be a powerful delivery mechanism for sharing insights and ideas in a way that is memorable, persuasive, and engaging.įor some people, crafting a story around the data may seem like an unnecessary, time-consuming effort. Modern-day storytelling is often associated with the popular TED conference series and its slogan of “Ideas Worth Spreading.” Analysis of the most popular 500 TED Talk presentations found that stories made up at least 65% of their content. Stories play a vibrant role in our daily lives-from the entertainment we consume to the experiences we share with others to what we conjure up in our dreams. Even in our digital age, stories continue to appeal to us just as much as they did to our ancient ancestors. Data storytelling is a structured approach for communicating data insights, and it involves a combination of three key elements: data, visuals, and narrative.įor thousands of years, storytelling has been an integral part of our humanity. Too often data storytelling is interpreted as just visualizing data effectively, however, it is much more than just creating visually-appealing data charts. The phrase “data storytelling” has been associated with many things-data visualizations, infographics, dashboards, data presentations, and so on. They rely on you to give them a clear and convincing voice.” Any insight worth sharing is probably best shared as a data story. If an insight isn’t understood and isn’t compelling, no one will act on it and no change will occur.ĭata visualization expert Stephen Few said, “Numbers have an important story to tell. However, unless we can improve the communication of these insights we will also see a poorer insight-to-value conversion rate. As a result, we’re going to see an unprecedented number of insights being generated within companies than ever before. This new breed of data tools will make it easier for people across business functions to access and explore the data on their own. With the shift towards more self-service capabilities in analytics and business intelligence, the pool of people generating insights will expand beyond just analysts and data scientists. The need for more data storytellers is only going to increase in the future.
